"Everything starts with reading!"
So many parents ask our advice for their younger children and more and more frequently they are looking to start tutoring early. Our advice is not to tutor (unless there is a specific issue or gap) and instead encourage your kids to READ and read lots! Read beyond what’s popular in the schoolground like Horrid Henry, Diary of Wimpy Kid and David Walliams books.
Although reading anything is better than no reading at all, we want to encourage your children to read the classics. If they start early on the classics, then vocabulary and creative writing skills will fall into place naturally as they progress through Key Stage 2. Classics are more descriptive and nuanced and engage young readers at a deeper level.
Reading early and reading lots of the right books is our number one recommendation for successful 11 Plus entry. That’s why we developed the Early Years Book Club for children from Year 3 upwards.
Every Sunday at 5pm (UK time), senior girls from St Paul's Girls and Charterhouse, amongst others, go through popular classics texts that will not only build your childs comprehension skills, but also grow their love of reading classics and the beauty in English language literature.
These Sunday sessions are FREE and will be delivered as online interactive sessions, where our super-clever senior English students guide your child through carefully selected comprehension texts. Sessions will involve reading a passage together from the week's chosen text, followed by discussion of the selected extract. Our sessions will help you:
- Improve vocabulary
- Learn comprehension techniques
- Motivate your child to read the books on the list.
PLACES STRICTLY LIMITED to maximum 20 pupils per week
