"Everything starts with reading and comprehension!"
So many parents ask our advice on what to concentrate on with their younger children and our advice is ALWAYS to encourage your kids to READ and to read lots! Read beyond what’s popular in the schoolground like Horrid Henry, Diary of Wimpy Kid and the David Walliams books.
While reading anything is better than no reading at all, we encourage children to read the classics. If they start early on the classics, then vocabulary and creative writing skills fall into place naturally. Classics are more descriptive and nuanced and engage young readers at a deeper level.
Reading and understanding lots of the right books as early as possible is our number one recommendation for successful 11 Plus entry. That’s why we've developed our KS2 Comprehension Club for children from Year 3 upwards.
Every Sunday at 5pm (UK time), senior girls from St Paul's Girls School and Charterhouse (amongst others), go through popular classics texts that will not only build your child's comprehension skills, but also grow their love of reading classics and the beauty in English language literature.
These Sunday sessions are FREE and are delivered as online interactive sessions, where our super-clever senior English scholars guide your child through carefully selected comprehension texts. Sessions will involve reading a passage together from the week's chosen text, followed by discussion of the selected extract. Our sessions will help you:
- Improve vocabulary
- Learn comprehension techniques
- Motivate your child to read the books on the list.
PLACES STRICTLY LIMITED to maximum 30 pupils per week
